"Came from Beneath the Sea" is important, first, because it meant the union of special effects guru, Ray Harryhausen with producer Charles H. Schnner. A partnership that will last twenty-six films that changed the genre forever. Harryhausen is best known for his work in 1963, "Jason and the Argonauts", but eight years before he gave us his most memorable image (the skeletons sword fighting), created a giant octopus ravaged San Francisco, after traveling across the Pacific Ocean. This may not be the best film of Harryhausen, but he has his magic, his personal touch. Just see octopus attacking the city. Who knows what would have been the film without the help of Harryhausen. Because let's face it, the best of the movie is the monster that despite the years and the evolution of special effects, has not lost any of their ferocity and realism (just look as it glides across the Golden Gate or when attacking the port.) Because there is an interaction between real people, the sets and puppets "In stop-motion", not so much as it should squeak when compared with the films actuales.Esto shows that when there is talent, even an archaic form in the design and creature movements can compete with modern technology in many cases .
The first twenty-seven minutes of the film are completely different from the rest of the film, and he used elements of documentary, with the voice-over explaining what is happening is that it seems almost like a newsreel. That gives the action a more timely, informing the viewer of what is happening. But as soon as it appears on our giant cephalopod scene, things change and the film is transformed into something totally than spectacular.
The script in fact, than the normal average for the series B of 50, because not only based on the monster but it puts a tremendous degree of attention to the characters and very interesting. Professor Joyce (Faith Domergue) is presented with enough personality to fill the screen. Accustomed to the players look fit only for palm and shouting over and over again, we find the character of a teacher intelligent, attractive and character (come on, that even gives orders to the military). In turn, the Commander Pete Matthews (Kenneth Tobey) repeats the same mold as his official talkative "The Thing from Another World" (actually, it seems the actors play their roles with the same profile as a detective in the noir of the forties, friendly, mischievous, heroic and ladies above all things). And probably the heroes of the series B, Kenneth Tobey is that he has had the best roles, over John Agar and Hugh Marlowe.
In final accounts, easy production of series B which far exceeds the average since there is an excellent combination of a good script and some amazing special effects. Classic "Plan 9"
