synopsis
Shigeru Kawamura is the engineer in charge of a coal mine in outskirts of Fukuoka. But the mine suffered a collapse and, when they go to investigate, several miners die in mysterious circumstances. It seems that the drilling has reached an underground cave and freed dozens of huge prehistoric insects - meganulas - which attack the population. The military fight the insects actually ... until they discover that there is a far greater danger than they are about to discover

This is the second attempt by the Toho to exploit the genre of "kaiju eiga" (the Japanese giant monsters), who was born with "Godzilla" (1954) and continued with "Godzilla Raids Again" (1955). The Toho would continue to "Varan, the Unbelievable "(1958) and" Motor "(1961), until finally come to realize that grace was that there were two monsters fighting each other. While some of that had been tested "Godzilla Raids Again" (which appears Anguiras), the formula just come to maturity in "King Kong vs. Godzilla" (1962), and the rest would be history. Deserves a special mention strange experiment "Half Human" 1955, directed by Ishiro Honda and banned by the Toho until today. The film was about the legend of the Abominable Snowman, and invented a tribe whose features were very similar to the Ainu, aboriginal Nipponese who have been persecuted for decades and have ended up being assimilated into force by the Japanese culture. As the issue was discriminatory and controversial, the studio decided to close definitively the film and find some version of it (even an Americanized with inserts of John Carradine) is very rare nowadays.
precisely in this process of Americanization of Japanese films came to play The King Brothers, who rearranged "Rodan" was inserted scenes and stories in English, and used the furor over "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" (1954) to exploit Fashion giant monsters. But we are lucky to find the original version of "Rodan" that has nothing to do with the Americanized version of the film. For Rodan is a rarity. Kaiju eiga is the first color and well shot by Honda, but the tone of the story is more serious and sad of what one might anticipate. Is less fun and more drama. A more recent history and less fanciful than most of the "kaiju eiga". In my opinion, a minor classic, but has become more attractive as it is rolled with another approach, more real. Reaching more than enough, I think, the scenes of the destruction of the town. It was not necessary. Course of action (the air strikes, missiles, ...) is inevitable, given the type of consumer groups such films. But I think in this case, the first half taking place in the mine, when, little by little, they will unravel the plot is much more attractive than the second part, dedicated to eradicating the problem (the extermination of monsters). Personally one of my favorites. Recommendation "Plan 9".
