What can you say about King Kong? Without any doubt, King Kong is one of the most famous and influential films of all time, imitated and honored by many titles, and made his protagonist and his final scene two icons of cinema. Besides being the precursor of the giant monster genre. Probably not this film or Godzilla and other giant beasts that have flooded the movie screens for decades, had never existed.
In principle, "King Kong" belong the genre of lost worlds ("lost world"). A fantasy born of the Great Victorian Age of Exploration (and to a lesser extent embryonic Victorian sciences of paleontology and Darwinism), which was popularized by writers such as Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle, Pierre Benoit, H. Rider Haggard and Edgar Rice Burroughs later. A time when a large area of \u200b\u200bAfrica, the poles, even part of the American West are still unknown and yet to be explored. The lost worlds are places outside of civilization, have never been trampled by the white man and are mainly characterized by its exoticism and that point of time that has stopped them (life prehistoric forgotten cities, civilizations extinct or legend, great treasures ,...). The perfect setting to introduce the adventure, fantasy and science fiction.
Willis O'Brien, the chief architect of the special effects in "King Kong" was one of the first to explore these worlds lost in the film. O'Brien had directed and created special effects for a series of silent films devoted to the subject - "The Dinosaur and the Missing Link" (1915), a silly light comedy that takes place in prehistory, and other prehistoric monsters short and "10,000 BC" (1916), "Prehistoric Poultry" (1916), "Curious Pets of Our Ancestors" (1917), "Along the Moonbeam Trail" (1920) and "The Ghost of Slumber Mountain" (1919), a classic of the genre of silent film prehistoric. He also created the effects of the classic silent version of the work of Conan Doyle, "The Lost World" (1925) -. For their part, directors Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsak had made two silent films was characterized also beyond the borders of civilization to go into more primitive worlds, "Grass" (1925), a documentary about the journey of a nomadic Iranian tribe and "Chang" (1927), a piece of fiction about elephant hunters, located in Thailand.
"King Kong" is a masterpiece of the genre. Think it was filmed in the early 30's, at the height of the Great Depression. A time when a considerable number of people had run out of money and no job. There was much poverty, and civilization and were dirty and dark reality of the lives of thousands of desperate people. Therefore, adventure films, fantastic and impossible in remote areas were popular in those years Appearing this "lost world" as an idealized realm, almost utopian. An unspoiled, natural, presented basic thousand times more attractive than civilization and all its problems and concerns. Other films of this decade as "Tarzan the Ape Man" (1932) and "Lost Horizon" (1937), we showed that vision that you could find happiness in life leaving civilization and returning to basics, to a life easier, thus forgetting the realities. "King Kong", as well as other works by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsak, it focuses on primary cultures that live close to nature. In this prehistoric world, Kong is clearly the king of the jungle and the film spends much time basking in the majesty of its original glory. The underlying thesis of "King Kong" is that civilization corrupts the greatness of the beast of the jungle (there are some touches of anti colonialism). The end of the film in which Kong is tragically gunned down by biplanes after climbing the highest peak in New York, the Empire State Building, is a hymn to the majesty primary is brought down by civilization, which swallows everything. Becoming such a scene in a mythical symbol in film history.
also noticed the high amount of violence and eroticism that are over their frames, whose use is quite advanced for its time, which will eventually bring the film to be missing footage in its successive revivals, until the 70 was re-released as its creators originally conceived it. Although the damage was done, and the tape lost in this trip and so far one of the most terrifying scenes in the film, one that was set in a ravine with a giant spider as protagonists.
The quality of the effects of Willis O'Brien's awesome. The level of detail (Kong gestures, shaking his head and rubbing his eyes when he pulled the gas pumps, or the twitch of the tail of Stegosaurus is not quite dead) is incredible. Incredibly fierce battle between Kong and a triceratops that lasts several minutes, is perhaps the best piece of stop-motion animation ever created for the screen.
The address is maintained with a steady, offering a dynamic completion, full of thrilling action, which leaves no room to rest. Is one of those movies that flies you. There
after "King Kong" a lot of remakes, imitations and forgeries, but none can ever match the original. An excellent film that is part of the largest in the history of cinema. Clasicazo "Plan 9"

Comment
King Kong (1933) was a huge success. And we all know that in Hollywood where revenues are abundant, giving rise to one or more sequels that exploit the success of the original film to the maximum extent possible. Thus, "The Son of Kong" was conceived quickly gathered the majority of key team members from "King Kong": The director Ernest B. Schoedsak, writer Ruth Rose, musician Max Steiner, the genius of Willis O'Brien special effects, being played by Robert Armstrong and Frank Reicher. So that only eight months after the original premiere was projected in theaters, "The Son of Kong."
The result is a work light and forgettable, but not much less unpleasant. We are facing a good adventure movie, but it is clearly not on, not nearly to the original: The great "King Kong." In addition, the film focuses primarily on the history prior to another trip to the "Skull Island." More than half of the film is dedicated to prepare (by chance) the new journey, including mutiny, and all washed down with large doses of comedy light by Carl Denham (and their creditors).
Although what really fails in this release is the way it is treated the character of Kong Jr. For if "King Kong" is a fable about the beauty and the beast and how it is destroyed by civilization, "The Son of Kong "shows us a gorilla comedy that exudes all four sides. Even the animations are designed to encourage the lightness and easy laugh, like scenes in which Kong Jr has his finger bandaged wounded, or shaking coconuts from a tree to Helen Marcos, where he accidentally fires a rifle. There are even comedic sound effects when you hit your head. Instead of a classic, what we have is a movie that seems destined for children. There are some moments that recall the ferocity of the jungle scenes of the original (like the fight with a bear, but the fight with what looks like a brontosaurus is certainly regrettable.) The climax of the film, with the sacrifice of Kong Jr is quite effective, but obviously not comparable to the destruction of his father by the planes in the Empire State Building.
A detail. Appears in the opening credits of the NRA logo, sponsor of the film. It is not the despicable American National Rifle Association, but The National Recovery Administration. An administrative body created by the U.S. government in the context of the New Deal (Roosevelt) in 1933, which determined that the industries will create "rules of fair competition" to prevent "destructive competition" and help workers to set minimum wages and maximum limits on hours of work.
Finally, guaranteed fun and a good continuation of our special double feature on the Family "Kong."
