... Once I was sitting in an interview at the Cambridge Zen Center when a man entered, tremendously excited, saying he had just had an enlightenment experience. And he described in great detail! The teacher listened and the nicest way possible, we asked, "Can you show that experience now?". Thus did the student know that if the experience had happened in the past, no longer lived. What matters is what is happening now. We often -about one thing or another in our lives-a sense that "If this were not so, be happy ... If not afraid, if I'm not angry, if I feel lonely ..., if I had to wash the dishes or taking out the trash, or fill out my tax return ... if it were not old, if not was ill, if he did not die ...». But all that is there. This is the situation as it is. And no situation prevents you from practicing. There is nothing in them that keep you from being truly happy. It is what you make of them what makes the difference.
And what you have to do is always the same: surrender to them completely. Live them in depth.
